The Waiting Room - Female Healers and Patients on the Periphery of Medicine

The “Gender Equality in East-Central Europe” programme of the FES organizes a series of discussions together with the curators of the art project “The Waiting Room - Female Healers and Patients on the Periphery of Medicine”.

The aim of the series is to address the controversial or under-emphasized but important role of female healers (eg. midwives, nurses) or diseases connected to women (like hysteria) and to shed light on the marginal role of women in the history of science. The first event deals with the issue of social control related to the female body and psyche. With Zsolt K. Horváth and Dóra Máriási, we talk primarily about the social expectations towards women concerning their behaviour and appearance. The starting points of the discussion are the art works of Zsuzsanna Simon and Balázs Varju Tóth  which can be seen at the Semmelweis Medical History Museum in Budapest.

Date: October 7 (Wednesday) , 18:00-19:00
