Housing solutions for the elderly

The Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung's Budapest Office, the Progressive Hungary Foundation (MMAA) and the Consultative Council of Senior Citizens' (NYUSZET) in Hungary are organising a joint event on 25 May 2023 on housing solutions that respond to the care needs of elderly people. The event will be held in Hungarian. Nonetheless, please let us draw your attention to some of our English-language publications in the topic of (paid and unpaid) elderly care in Hungary, as the FES in Budapest is working for several years systematically on the topic.

  • A publication which is an overview of the current demographic tendencies and the Hungarian care structures for the elderly. The study describes the growing needs, the accessibility and financing of social care for the elderly and it anaylises the different types of caregivers: A. Gyarmati (2019): Ageing and Care for the Elderly in Hungary - General Survey and Problems, Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung Budapest, https://library.fes.de/pdf-files/bueros/budapest/15482.pdf
  •  A publication which is a deep anaylsis of the working conditions of employees in elderly care. The study focuses on Hungary, but it gives a European-wide outlook: A. Gyarmati (2022): Situation of Those Working in Elderly Care in the EU and in Hungary, Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung Budapest, https://library.fes.de/pdf-files/bueros/budapest/19549.pdf ; A short video on the publication with English subtitles: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cYUBuubSqRM
  • A short analysis on the effect of the pandemic on Hungarian women which highlights the fact that women are overrepresented in the social services jobs that were in the frontline of the Covid-crisis and also the challenges families with small children and elderly relatives who needed to be cared for had: E. Kováts (2022): The Effect of Covid-19 on Women in Hungary - A Short Analysis of Social, Economic and Policy Changes, Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung Budapest, https://library.fes.de/pdf-files/bueros/budapest/19548.pdf
  • An edited volume on care migration with the purpose to provide a panoramic picture of the causes and mechanisms of care migration from and to central and eastern Europe. Most chapters are written by scholars from the respective CEE country: N. Katona, A. Melegh (Eds.) (2020): Towards a scarcity of care? – Tensions and contradictions in transnational elderly care in central and Eastern europe, Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung Budapest, https://library.fes.de/pdf-files/bueros/budapest/16945.pdf
  • A discussion paper which summarises the most important structural problems that characterise the live-in care market and policymaking at the national and EU-level: N. Katona, E. Zacharenko (2021): The Dependency on East-to-West care labour migration in the EU – Addressing Inequalities and Exploitation, Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung Budapest, https://library.fes.de/pdf-files/bueros/budapest/18038.pdf
  • A publication which had the purpose to find out what ‘women’s affairs’ are for Hungarian women and what society, both women and men, think about these. As one of the results, unpaid care duties (both child care and elderly care) are primarily seen as the responsibility of women and mean a big challenge when it comes to balancing work and family life: A. Gregor, E. Kováts (2018): Women's Affairs 2018 - Societal Problems and Solution Strategies in Hungary, Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung Budapest, https://library.fes.de/pdf-files/bueros/budapest/14462.pdf
