Should the left-wing opposition in Hungary cooperate with Jobbik?

The unexpected defeat of the Fidesz-candidate at the mayoral election in Hódmezővásárhely has revitalised the public debate about a co-operation between left-liberal parties and the far-right Jobbik party at the parliamentary elections 2018.

Therefore, we would like to draw your attention to two English FES-publications already written in December 2017: Péter Krekó argues that 2018 might be the last chance to defeat Fidesz which is more of a threat to democracy and the integrity of the EU these days than Jobbik. Ildikó Lendvai, former President of the Hungarian Socialist Party (MSZP), takes the opposite position. A third publication, in German language, by Magdalena Marsovszky, also deals with this question and argues that a co-operation with Jobbik would foster antidemocratic tendencies.

Krekó, Péter: Rethinking the Far Right in Hungary. Defeating Orbán is impossible without Jobbik's votes http://library.fes.de/pdf-files/bueros/budapest/14182.pdf

Lendvai, Ildikó: Why should the left-wing opposition in Hungary not work together with the far-right jobbik party? http://library.fes.de/pdf-files/bueros/budapest/14183.pdf
