Marx (1818-2018): Central and Eastern European Perspectives

2018 marks the 200th anniversary of the birth of Karl Marx, the important social theorist and eponym of Marxism. With his societal studies and theory of political economy, Karl Marx has managed to influence our thinking to this day, be it in everyday life or in politics. Since the global financial and economic crisis, Marx's ideas and a "Marxist" criticism of capitalism are once again gaining influence.

But to what extent can Marxism still shape our theories today? Can we explain current destructive developments with the help of Marxism? And what is the relevance of Marxism today in Central and Eastern Europe, in the former communist countries?

At "Marx (1818-2018): Central and Eastern European Perspectives", a joint event of the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung Budapest and the Social Theory Research Group of the Institute for Political History, renowned scientists and interested members of the audience tried to find answers to these questions in various panel discussions, and subjected Marx’s intellectual legacy to further critical analysis.
